Choking ranks as the fourth most common cause of accidental fatalities globally and affects individuals of all ages.

A decade ago, my son Michael passed away from a sudden, preventable accident.

Though it's a difficult memory to revisit, I hope that by sharing my story, I can help others prevent similar incidents from happening.

By the end of this article, you will have a complete understanding of how to respond to choking emergencies, no matter where they occur, be it at home, work, school, or a nursing home. Your newfound knowledge could even help you save someone's life, including your own.

Here's my story. During a Thanksgiving dinner, Michael suddenly began choking.

As a nurse who works in an emergency room, I acted quickly and attempted back blows. When those didn't work, I tried abdominal thrusts, but I couldn't generate enough force. My husband then attempted back blows, but they were also unsuccessful. He then tried abdominal thrusts while I called for an ambulance, but it was too late.

Michael was taken from us right there at the dinner table, in front of the whole family, as we helplessly tried to save him using back blows and abdominal thrusts.

Let me tell you, there's nothing as horrible as watching your 4-year-old son die a death that could have been prevented, right there in your arms. I think about it every day.

I have so many regrets. I let my guard down, I wasn't prepared, I never thought this would happen to me.

It took me weeks to even pick up the phone and I didn't leave the house for months. But when I finally stepped out, I decided to turn this tragedy into something good.

I couldn't bring Michael back, but I was able to help stop other families from going through the same thing.

So, the next weekend, I started my mission to raise awareness about choking hazards, especially during the weekends when people are more relaxed and the risk of choking is even higher.

I go to schools, offices, and nursing homes to educate teachers, children, and seniors about choking hazards and how to prevent them. I cover topics like safe eating habits, avoiding small toys and packaging around children, and more.

Certainly, I educate on how to rescue a choking individual as well, and in the past, I used to suggest alternating between abdominal thrusts and back blows.

Yes, the very same methods that failed to save Michael. I continued to suggest them because there wasn't a better alternative.

The failure to save Michael using my first-aid training haunted me for years. I couldn't help but wonder if my technique was incorrect or if I made a mistake. Why couldn't I save him? These questions constantly ran through my mind.

Regrettably, abdominal thrusts are only successful in rescuing 70-85% of choking victims, even when performed correctly.

Moreover, it carries a high risk of causing rib fractures, rupturing the diaphragm, or damaging the digestive system.

While back blows can be helpful, they also pose the risk of driving the object further down the throat.

For this reason, I concentrate most of my teachings on preventing choking incidents, even though they are difficult to avoid altogether.

So, I would always feel anxious whenever someone asked me:

"What do you do when abdominal thrusts and back blows are unsuccessful?"

"What do you do when abdominal thrusts and back blows are unsuccessful?"

I used to have no response to that question. The very thought of it would bring back memories that were difficult to deal with.

But that all changed last year. I now have a much better solution: VacGuard™ .

VacGuard™ is a revolutionary anti-choking device that can quickly and effectively save someone who is choking, even when traditional first aid methods have failed.

I was introduced to VacGuard™ by a doctor at the hospital where I work, and at first, I was filled with frustration. I knew that if this device had been available ten years earlier, it could have saved Michael's life.

The fact that VacGuard™ wasn't available to my family during that time felt unjust. But after learning about its numerous life-saving capabilities and hearing about the many lives it has already saved, I came to understand its significance and started spreading the word about it to everyone I could.

If you haven't heard of VacGuard™, it is an essential safety tool that you must be aware of. It's an indispensable safety net to have on hand.

You might be shocked to hear that choking can happen to anyone, no matter how old or big they are. Just imagine:

a 57-year-old man almost choking on dessert,

a 2-year-old girl choking on a string,

an 9-week-old baby with GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) choking on her bottle of formula, or

a 25-year-old man choking on a piece of pizza.

But don't worry, because VacGuard™ was there to save the day and keep everyone breathing. In fact, it's been used in all sorts of situations and has never failed! It's 100% effective, every time.

VacGuard™: Your Weekend Safety Must-Have. Here's why:

VacGuard™: Your Weekend Safety Must-Have. Here's why:

During my years of teaching and working in emergency rooms, I have witnessed various choking incidents and observed that they tend to increase during weekends.

In 2020, there were 150,000 ER visits due to toy-related incidents, most of them related to choking (!) - making it the fourth leading cause of accidental deaths globally.

This is particularly concerning during the weekends as families come together for MEALS and often engage in conversation and laughter rather than being mindful of chewing their food properly.

Moreover, traveling and family gatherings can lead to children playing together in unfamiliar surroundings, making them vulnerable to choking on toys, new foods, and household items that are not child-proofed.

It's important to note that choking can happen to individuals of all ages, body types, and lifestyles.

Therefore, to ensure safety, I highly recommend having a VacGuard™ on hand at all times.

How Does VacGuard™ Work?

How Does VacGuard™ Work?

VacGuard™ features a unique patented one-way valve that enables effective suction to remove any food or object that may be blocking the airway.

When the plunger is pressed down, the valve lets air out of the mask. When you pull the plunger back up, the valve creates a tight seal that pulls the object out of the airway.

With VacGuard™, it is impossible to push the object further down the airway.

Although it may take several plunges to remove a stubborn object, the patented valve has a proven track record of saving lives in every instance it has been used.

Additionally, the VacGuard™ is manually powered and requires no electricity, batteries, or charging, ensuring that it is always ready to save lives!

Who Needs VacGuard™?

Who Needs VacGuard™?

As an emergency room nurse who has witnessed choking incidents both in the workplace and at home, I believe that everyone should own a VacGuard™ for their home and vehicle.

This is because VacGuard™ is the only option available when abdominal thrusts and back blows are ineffective, and it has proven to be highly effective.

Additionally, in many instances, abdominal thrusts are simply not feasible. For example:

People living alone,

Pregnant women,

Infants,

Those who are medically fragile,

Large individuals

In these situations, VacGuard™ offers a safe and harmless solution for removing the obstructing object. In my professional opinion, when faced with a choking emergency, I would trust VacGuard™ over any other alternative.

The passing of Michael resulted in a devastating loss for my family.

However, I find solace in the fact that with each weekend, I am able to share VacGuard™, a remarkable safety device, with more and more people.

I have gifted VacGuard™ to a variety of individuals, including friends, family members, teachers, colleagues, coaches, babysitters, and neighbors. My goal is to continue to spread awareness about VacGuard™ and gift it in honor of Michael for the rest of my life.
